Beginning Weaving and Color Blending on a Drum Carder are being offered in
the morning and afternoon, at 10:00 and again at 1:00.
There will be a Spin, Knit, and Whatever Circle for community fiber work and
fellowship. Please check the facility layout in your program for location.
Attendees are welcome to bring spinning and / or any other fiber activity
(i.e., knitting, crocheting, etc.) to this CIRCLE.
Color
Color Blending on the Drum Carder by Mary Hartley
Learn how to get the best batt for the amount of time you spend on your drum
carder; to blend colors, completely and incompletely, depending on the look you
want; to ‘pull’ a batt to make for excellent spinning.
Microwave Dyeing by Char Rickey
An introduction to dyeing yarn or roving the easy way – in the microwave! You
will learn to dye yarn and roving without a messy dye pot and how to set the
color by using a regular microwave oven. No experience necessary. Attendance
is limited to 20. All materials provided for a fee of $12.00.
Crochet
Beginning / Basic Crochet
Bring your hook, yarn, and pattern. Visit the Spin Knit Whatever Circle for
community fellowship.
Felting
Wet Felting by Julie Garand
Create a purse by using wet
felting techniques, incorporating colored rovings for added design and a
discussion on a needle felted application. Materials will be provided to finish
the bag with a top closure and strap. Attendance is limited to 15 with a
materials fee of $10.00 for wool roving, hand-dyed pencil roving, pre-sewn,
lined purse with top and strap.
Knitting
Beginning / Basic Knitting
Bring your needles, yarn, and pattern. Visit the Spin Knit Whatever Circle for
community fellowship.
Knit a Silk Hankie by Betty Shreeves
This class will show you how to knit from unspun mawatta silk hankies. We will
start with a basic scarf pattern which can be finished after the class.
Participants are asked to bring size 5 and 9 straight or circular needles and
will need to know basic knitting stitches. Patterns provided. Limited to 15
with a $20 class fee and $8 materials fee.
Turn a Heel, Close a Toe by Lee Breeggemann
Want to make socks but find turning a heel
intimidating? Having trouble mastering the kitchener stitch to close up your
toes? Learn heels and toes for toe-up and top-down socks. Bring worsted weight
or DK yarn and a set of 5 appropriately sized DPN’s. Attendance limited to 15
students.
Miscellaneous
Beaded Scissor Fob by Leslie Schenkel
Assemble fun "jewelry" for your scissors (or this
project can hang from your favorite knitting bag, too!). Using lampwork beads,
seed beads and basic beading skills, finish this colorful project in class. No
experience necessary. Attendance is unlimited. All materials for a fee of
$15.00. Additional kits available for purchase both during class and at the
"Twisted Chicken" booth.
Lawn Chair Macramé by Judy Huggins
Introduction to recycling method for older chairs that need to be recovered.
The technique will be demonstrated and the information for resource materials
will be provided. Participants will have some hands-on to practice techniques.
No skills required. Limited to 25 participants with a $1.00 fee for handouts.
Reclaim Refurbish Reuse by Mary Anne Staker
Introduction on reclaiming sweaters for re-knitting
and / or felting; how to choose the correct sweater, what the process is for
taking a sweater apart, cleaning and drying the fiber, how to determine the
correct weight. Bring your scissors, straight ruler, cable needle or something
to pick at stitches, and a sweater. No skills required. No fee. Attendance
unlimited.
Wheel Mechanics I by Richard Hartley
You will learn the parts of a spinning wheel and how
they work, how to measure the wheel to determine its ratios and why ratios are
important. You will also learn about the care and feeding of a spinning wheel.
Attendance is unlimited and no materials are required. Participants should
know how to spin, but no degree of expertise is necessary. Bring your wheel if
you have one.
Wheel Mechanics II by Richard Hartley
This is a continuation of the morning Wheel Mechanics class, learning how to
determine wheel ratios, why they are important and how to balance a ply. No
limit on attendance. No materials required. Participants should know how to
spin using a wheel and should bring their own wheel if they have one.
Spinning
Drop Spindle Spinning by Kathy Kingsbury
Learn to make a drop spindle from old, free, and / or
out-of-date computer program CDs. In this workshop, we will put together a CD
drop spindle and learn to spin with it. No skills required. Limit 20.
Materials fee will not exceed $5.00.
Beginning Wheel Spinning by Tom Svihla
This class is for anyone interested in learning to spin or for beginners needing
some assistance as it is an introduction to spinning with a wheel. You will
learn basic information about wheel parts, maintenance, fiber prep, and hands-on
spinning. A limited number of wheels will be available. If you have your own,
bring it along. There is no fee. Attendance is unlimited; all materials will be
provided.
“Let’s Ply” – Beyond Beginning Spinning by Tom Svihla
Now that you are getting the hang of spinning fiber on a wheel, what do you do
with the bobbins and balls of singles? This class will show you how to ply
those singles into 2, 3, and 4-ply yarns. Class is open to anyone who wants to
learn about plying methods. You can expect to learn a basic 2-ply, Navajo 3-ply,
and an easy 2-step 4-ply. We will also discuss creation of novelty yarns
through plying. At a minimum, you must be a beginning spinner. Bring a spinning
wheel, two bobbins of single spun, a ball of single spun and one empty bobbin.
Bring extra empty bobbins if you have them. No fee, no limit.
Weaving
Weaving on a Mini Loom by Mike Behm
Learn to weave a small pouch that
can hold a cell phone, coins, or other treasures. All materials, including a
loom and weaving needles, will be provided for a fee of $30. Attendance
unlimited. No skills required.
Triangular Loom Weaving by Maryella Goldsmith
An introduction to weaving on a
triangular loom. Easy to learn and fun for all. Triangular looms, yarn, and
instruction sheet will be provided. If you have a crochet hook, please bring it
with you. No previous weaving experience necessary. Workshop fee is $25.00.
Limited to 12 attendees.
